The Thatch House, Hermanus, South Africa

 Why we love it

Hermanus has become a busy bustling town over weekends and holidays, which is why we loved being just outside of town with the solitude of the lake and the backdrop of the mountains. Once inside the property there is almost no reason or inclination to leave. Our kids loved all the activities and the sense of freedom and space.

 What to expect

Sleeping 20 people this  fully staffed villa is perfect for small functions, group gatherings and retreats. The style is opulent, with enormous bedrooms and bathrooms, all offering lake views. The massive living area has wonderful fireplaces for winter, and doors opening on to the two heated pools for summer. You can choose to cook yourself, or their chef/manager Terry can whip up either a kid’s snack or a three course meal. A picnic down at the jetty is a great option.

 What to do

The property boasts its own floodlit tennis court, golf putting green, two solar heated pools, a small gym with a jacuzzi, a power boat and canoes and the worlds best tree house! Its non stop fun if you are active, and the lounger chairs and upstairs library work for those in search of rest and down time. Nearby there is Whale Watching and Shark Cage Diving and the famous cliff path for long walks or runs.

 When to visit

Winter is glorious when the rain stays away, as it is wind free and the quality of light is wonderful, and of course July to November the whales are a treat in Hermanus. Summer means long lazy evenings around the pool and the nearby beaches.

Kids: What a treat to be in a place where your kids can run free and safe while you relax. The tennis and golf kept our boys busy all day, and younger kids will never leave the tree house and jungle gym. The TV room with it’s pool table is perfect for kids wanting to cosy up after dinner in front of a DVD. The rooms all have adjoining kid’s rooms. Beware parents of toddlers - there is a lot of open water.

 How to get there

A scenic 90 minute drive from Cape Town either via the stunning coastal road or the Hemel and Aarde wine valley. Suggest stop for lunch at Moggs country restaurant.
