Ocean House. De Hoop Nature Reserve. Western Cape.
Why we love it:
Ocean House offers a bird’s eye view of the continent’s greatest whale nursery and is situated in total isolation in De Hoop Nature Reserve with it's 51 km of wild beaches and fynbos treasures. It is a coastal wilderness of white dunes, rich birdlife and endemic antelope. Built almost into the hillside and hidden with its roof top garden, the villa boasts an eco friendly, fully solar operation. Everything is possible – the staff will plan your excursions around your desires and interpret the natural world around you.
What to expect:
Expect to be cocooned in luxury, adrift in your own 4-bedroom oceanfront home, watching whales breaching the ice-blue water. This designer home offers extreme comfort and luxury, but a relaxed friendly feel with staff always ready to help. Every detail has been carefully planned and put together to create a beautiful space of light and endless views. Food is fresh and local and served with flair and always around your own schedule.
What to do:
On your doorstep: Coastal walks, rock pool rambles, whale watching, mountain biking, sand boarding, kite building, sand dune sundowners. Nearby: Boat-based whale watching, wine tasting, horse riding and shark cage diving. Or, put on your sarong, grab your book and head down to the little private beach and spend the day with the kids exploring the rock pools.
When to visit: De Hoop has something to offer all year round, but August to October is the best whale watching season. Cold in winter, but often with glorious sunny days and hot and windy in summer.
Kids are very welcome at Ocean House and catered for. The area is a kids playground of little beaches with rock pools and sand boarding on the dunes. The staff are excellent with kids.
How to get there : 3 Hour drive from Cape Town with some of that on good sand roads. It has its own airstrip and helipad.
