The Lookout Villa, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa
Why we love it
In Plett, the playground of the sun-seeking sophisticates – it’s all about location, location. The Plettenberg Hotel with it’s two villas is perched on a cliff top, overlooking two premium beaches and a stroll to the trendy parts of town. Despite offering only a partial view from the villa itself, we love that you have access to the hotel’s facilities and dramatic location, its helpful staff and services, while enjoying total privacy and a relaxed home where kids can be themselves. We love its private pool and sun deck and the short saunter to the next door spa.
What to expect
Gentle cream and powder-blue wicker furnishings make this 3-bedroom oceanfront home feel like your own. There is no need to get kids off the sofas or to worry about meals, and the bar is stocked with your favourite drinks. The cosy house offers extreme comfort and luxury, but with a relaxed barefoot-beach feel and the staff are always ready to help. Meals can be enjoyed in the house or a hop across to Seafood – their fabulous restaurant and funky bar. Breakfasts of the freshest most sublime food are a treat on the hotel's famous terrace, hovering over the sea.
What to do
Plett is a place to relax. Yes, you can do whale watching boat trips, kaying, deep sea fishing, hikes and forest rambles – but we recommend you grab a towel, and head down to the long beaches below the villa and stretch out with the kids and enjoy slow days. The Lookout Deck is a big favourite for casual outdoor meals. Dont forget the spa, which has a wonderful menu of pamperings.
When to visit
The area is of course gorgeous in summer when swimming is tempting, but we love the crisp clear winter days where the mountains are clear, the sun is warm and the sea is calm. And of course the whales are there between June and November and you dont get a better place to watch them than the hotel terrace!
Kids are what this house is designed for. Hotels often dont work well with kids when they are tired, sandy, cranky - in the villa you have the privacy of the house, while still being able to hop next door for a romantic dinner, while a babysitter keeps an eye on the kids and they curl up with a movie and kid's dinner.
How to get there
An easy 5 hour drive from Cape Town or make use of the Plett aiport with daily flights from Johannesburg.
