The Heritage Suites at Steenberg Estate. Cape Town. South Africa
Why we Love it
Steenberg is the oldest farm in the Constantia Valley with a 325 year history and the luxury suites are a wonderful blend of historical architecture and furnishings with sophisticated contemporary design and technology. They are in a quiet and secure rural setting amidst exquisite mountains and vineyards. Two top restaurants and a superb golf course are on the Steenberg Estate and it's a short drive from Cape Town's biggest attractions like the Constantia Winelands, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens,Table Mountain and Simon's Town's penguins. We love that it's so much part of the city, but in a totally rural setting.
What to expect
The three Heritage Suites at Steenberg (Cape Colonial, Khoikhoi and Dutch East India) each recall an important era in the history of South Africa. They are located in the Jonkershuis Building, which is literally the "young man's house", adjacent to the historical Steenberg Homestead. Each suite has two levels with 2 en suite bedrooms upstairs that have commanding views of Table Mountain and king sized beds with the finest linen. Downstairs is the main living area, kitchen and lounge decorated with original artworks and valuable furniture. There are televisions in the living room, bedroom and bathroom and wi-fi throughout, plus ipod docking stations, personal fax and copying facilities and PC data and power outliets. Butler service is provided and guests may dine privately in the house or make use of Catharina's Restaurant (serving fine contemporary South African food) only about 40 meters away, or Bistro Sixteen82 a short walk through the vineyards. The suites share an outside patio and large pool.
What to do
Steenberg winery produces suberb award winning South African wines and you'll no doubt enjoy a tasting and cellar tour, with no drive home necessary! Residents of the Heritage Suites may also make use of Steenberg's 18-hole Championship Golf Course as well as the Ginkgo Wellness Centre with its wide range of treatments. The Suites are 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town and 30 minutes from Simon's Town and the wonderful drives along the Cape coastline. Mountain biking, hiking trails and helicopter flights are easily arranged on request.
Kids Kids of any age are very welcome, and there are expansive gardens with plenty of space to explore, oak trees to climb, squirrels to watch. Dining arrrangements are flexible and nannies can be arranged. Steenberg is ten minutes from Muizenberg's long sandy beach and a short coastal drive to Fish Hoek family beach and the penguin colony near Simon's Town, plus seawater pools and rock pools along the way. En-route, stop at the delightful Mineral World Scratch Patch near Simonstown to collect a bag full of semi-precious stones.
The Good news
Many of Steenbergs buildings are National Monuments and meet the constraints laid down for heritage buildings. While the exterior is not permitted to be altered in any way, the interiors have been changed dramatically, and new life has been breathed into the old buildings.
When to go there
Cape Town has its peak season from November to February which coincides with the warm summer months. March and April are some of my favourite months for great weather. The winter months from May to September do bring rain but there are also many clear days it's a great time for wine tasting, fire-side dinners, spring flowers, whale watching and also coincides with the best season for big game safari in the Kruger area.
How to get there
Steenberg is 30 minutes drive from Cape Town International Airport.
