Else's Kopje. Meru National Park. Kenya

Why we love it

Elsa's Kopje Private House is perched on a hill overlooking Meru National Park - the same park where Joy Adamson author of the book ‘Born Free’ raised Elsa the lioness. With commanding views of Mt Kenya and the Nyambeni Mountains, the thatched camp is built above the site of George Adamson's original camp. It’s an elegant hideaway and wonderful base from which to explore this reserve, famous for diverse wildlife and rhino. A private guide and 4x4 game-viewing vehicle are at your disposal.

What to expect

Elsa's Kopje Private House is incorporated into the curves of Mghwango rock making it feel very organic. It has just 2 bedrooms; a master en suite bedroom with a magnificent central bathtub and a refreshing outdoor shower, plus a twin bedded room with en suite bathroom. The spacious living and dining areas flow seamlessly outside to the private garden and swimming pool. Meals can be served in the privacy of your house, or you might like to join guests of Elsa’s Kopje main lodge. Dining is a real treat with many Italian dishes inspired by owners Liz & Stefano Cheli, plus fresh herb salads picked from their own veggie garden and home-baked bread made in the outdoor pizza oven.

What to do

Early morning game drives, plus afternoon and night drives reveal highlights like lions, giraffe, and rhino. And if you want to set off for a day beside the Tana River for a spot of fishing and bird watching, the staff will pack you a scrummy picnic. When a game drive seems too much effort, book a hot stone massage at the main lodge and pick up mementos from the curio shop.

The good news

Elsa’s Kopje’s runs several community and conservation projects and guests are invited to visit them.

Kids: You have complete flexibility at Elsa’s Kopje Private House with outings and meals designed around your needs.  They’ll love the pool and toys and a babysitter is available.

How to get there

From Nairobi it's a one hour scheduled flight to Kinna airstrip. Then it’s a 45 minute game drive to the lodge. Private charters can land on Mughwango airstrip, just 5 minutes from Elsa’s Kopje. There’s also a helipad.

When to visit

Meru National Park has a wonderful climate all year round and game viewing is superb throughout the year. Rains usually fall in November and again from April to June, however rain usually falls during the evenings leaving the days and night hot and dry.
