Ellerman Villa at Ellerman House. Cape Town. South Africa
Why we love it.
You will have to look very hard to find a more stunning villa in such a superb setting anywhere in the world. This modern, elegant three-story home is high above Cape Town’s Bantry Bay in the most sheltered and breathtaking location on Cape Town’s prestigious Atlantic Seaboard. Once the home of the Ellerman shipping family, it is now an elegant retreat boasting an important collection of South African artworks. It has unsurpassable views over Table Bay towards Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), with Clifton and Camps Bay’s startlingly white beaches a short walk away. The villa is very close to the city of Cape Town, yet offers a peaceful and tranquil ocean-view retreat.
What to expect
This magnificent 3-storey Villa has a total of five bedrooms plus the Ellerman Spa on the lower level. You can take all three floors with the five bedrooms, or just the top two levels with three bedrooms. The top two floors are self-contained with a private entrance and private lift or stairs, a pool plus a study, entertainment area and fully equipped modern kitchen. The ground floor has the Spa and two further bedrooms and another infinity pool. When taking the whole villa you get complete exclusivity and unlimited spa treatments and a private chef and hospitality team. The villa offers access to all the 5-star Ellerman Hotel facilities, including its excellent restaurant, lounges and swimming pool and renowned art gallery.
What to do
Ellerman Villa offers a wonderful base from which to enjoy Cape Town’s attractions, such as Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and many glorious beaches, all just a short drive away. Day trips to Cape Point and the Cape Winelands are also delightful. Or relax at the villa, soak up the sun and enjoy the spa and restaurants. Our guess is you won’t want to go anywhere!
Kids The Villa is right above wind free beaches and with the Waterfront nearby there are plenty of activities to keep kids interested. The house does not have any kids facilities, toys or designated area, but the staff are so obliging and will certainly organise this on request. There are many levels, balconies and open swimming pools so parents of very young children will need to be vigilant. Babysitters and caregivers can be arranged.
The good news
Ellerman House has a highly regarded art gallery featuring the work of some of South Africa’s best contemporary artists. The gardens have been cultivated with indigenous plants endemic to the Cape Floral Kingdom and create a glorious foreground before the watery horizon.
