Colina Verde, Machangulo Reserve, Southern Mozambique
Why we love it
Situated overlooking the pristine beaches of the wild Indian Ocean on one side of the narrow peninsula and the calm warm Maputo Bay on the other – the villa offers endless activities in a secluded paradise. We love the villa’s incredible design elements of indigenous wood and local materials and its location on a breezy dune, with nobody for miles. Mostly we love the staff, who weave magic in to each day. After five minutes it will feel like your own home – without the parts you don’t like. We love the generosity of spirit – everything is included, and nothing is too much trouble.
What to expect:
Barefoot beach-style sophistication. The villa caters for a maximum of 12 guests in 7 bedrooms. Some bedrooms have bunk beds that can take extra kids. There are numerous living areas and outside decks and a huge oval pool, heated in winter. There is a full time management couple on call and 24 hour security. The chef produces fresh seafood caught just hours before, and offers light healthy meals. Spa treatments can be arranged in the house as well as yoga. There are cosy spaces for cooler evenings, but mostly the living is outside and informal.
What to do:
Long beach walks where you see nobody, rock pool snorkeling, whale watching, fat biking, turtle tracking (in season), sand boarding, tennis, snorkeling picnic to Inhaca Island and to the Maputo Elephant Reserve. Canoe trips in the mangroves, and a village tour to Santa Maria. Best of all, deep sea fishing with legendary fishing guide Graham Pollard. You will not have a better fishing experience with another guide. If the shear magnificance of the villa isnt enough, you wont be bored exploring the surrounds.
When to visit:
Mozambique is hottest between October and March. Humidity is high then. The winter months are cooler but still balmy with water temperatures tropical. Expect occasional dramatic tropical storms.
Kids: This house was built with kids in mind and they feel very welcomed. The games room, huge pool and two hot tubs, the sand boarding and the star-viewing tower are all kids favourites. The staff will accommodate kids early meals and the banana cinnamon pancakes with Nutella for breakfast will soon be their favourite! They are included in every way - right down to the virgin cocktails at sunset.
How to get there: It has its own helipad and there is a nearby airstrip. However it’s an easy 90 minute boat transfer from Maputo Marina when the weather is good. From the beach it’s a further five minute road transfer.
